Trial lawyer, Ira Sherman to Speak to the American Association for Justice at their Mid-Winter Convention in Miami, Florida
Ira Sherman is co-chair of the litigation group entitled “Embolization Devices (cyanoacrylates)”. This committee was established as a result of the successful litigation conducted by Mr. Sherman and his co-counsel on behalf of a 14 year old who fainted as a result of a bleed in her brain caused by an arterial-venous malformation which had begun to leak.
The condition was wrongfully diagnosed as life threatening and the parents were presented with an option, and only one option, that could save the life of their child. The physician presented the parents with the option of inserting the chemical equivalent of Super Glue®, cyanoacrylate, into the blood vessel “feeding” the malformed blood vessels in the brain in an effort to embolize, (eliminate) the configuration of abnormal blood vessels. In fact, other less dangerous options were available and no emergency existed. Nevertheless, the parents, uninformed of the other alternatives, selected this one option which they believed was the only one that could save their daughter’s life. The procedure was performed and the glue spurted out of the catheter which was inserted into the blood vessel onto the child’s brain, causing multiple strokes.
This 14 year old child, once a cheerleader, is now forced to live a life of a totally disabled individual. Because of the cutting edge nature of this successful lawsuit, and the fact that it was discovered that cyanoacrylate was being used in this fashion when it was either unnecessary to do so or in a careless way, the America Trial Lawyers Association voted and decided to establish a litigation committee whose purpose it would be to educate other lawyers regarding the use of cyanoacrylate as an embolization device.
In furtherance of the objective to educate attorneys regarding the use of cyanoacrylates as an embolization device Mr. Sherman will be presenting and lecturing on that topic at the America Association for Justice’s Mid-Winter Convention in Miami, Florida on February 12, 2007.
